The details of Find My Device were revealed at Google’s developer conference, Google I/O 2024. Android 15 will be unveiled at this event on May 14. As part of smartphone security, details about a feature that can quickly locate lost smartphones may also come to light. This feature works even when the smartphone is turned off and without an internet connection.
This offline feature has been the subject of many news stories since last year. According to Android Police, this feature will be available in Android 15 and will work similarly to Apple Find My Network. Bluetooth works through beacon signalling, meaning the smartphone’s location can be detected even when switched off.
Google I/O 2023 focused on the Find My Device network feature, which is not yet available. However, recent steps have been taken to make this feature available. Once it is available, it will improve device security and personal security by alerting users if third party apps try to find their location without permission. Google’s Find My Device feature currently works on Android and Wear OS when the mobile is turned on. The offline tracking feature will be available soon.
This feature will also increase in usage. In any situation, users can know their location through this feature if they are not able to share their location due to the internet not being available. However, this feature is not yet available for all smartphones. Reports suggest that it will be available on the soon-to-be-released Google Pixel 9 smartphone and possibly the Google Pixel 8, as some hardware changes may be required. Therefore, this feature will likely be available on Google Smartphones like Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel Fold.
